I have been working for the past 22 years providing counselling and psychotherapy to individual adults, children, adolescents and families. I began my career by training and working with adults who were recovering from abuse and trauma. A need was identified in West Auckland for people to help troubled children. I became interested in the psychological and emotional difficulties of children and took the opportunity to train as a child and adolescent psychotherapist. I completed this training in 1999. I worked part time for 10 years assessing and treating children and adolescents for CYFS where I developed “Keeping Safe” abuse prevention literature. I have been in private practice in West Auckland for 16 years where I see people for a wide range of issues.
I trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy but in my practice I use a range of therapeutic models according to age and individual needs. Some of these models include cognitive / behaviour therapy, sand tray therapy, trauma and abuse treatment models including EMDR, attachment therapy, psycho education and play therapy. I aim to facilitate healing and change in a way that is comfortable and respectful of individual and family values and beliefs.
Caroline begins by establishing a safe, trusting relationship with a child and his / her family. I work in a therapeutic playroom that is appealing to children. Play and creative media are offered alongside talking as a natural way for children to express their feelings and worries and work through troubling issues. When working with children Caroline liaises closely with parents and caregivers keeping them updated with their child’s progress. I talk with parents at the beginning and throughout the child’s counselling to hear concerns and offer support and practical suggestions to help with behaviour problems.
I provide a safe and understanding environment to help young people feel comfortable. When working with young people creative media like paint, drawing, clay and sand tray are offered alongside talking. For adolescents it is important to find the model that best suits the individual. Confidentiality and involvement of parents is carefully discussed at the beginning of counselling.
I work with family members to resolve difficulties, mend relationships and improve communication between family members. I also work with parents and caregivers to assist with parenting issues for both children and teenagers.
I offer supervision and training to people working with children and adolescents.
